March 24 - March 29

Hello Parents,

Hope your March is coming to a fantastic end! We are saying hello to April on Monday. I don't know about you, but I am ready to see some Spring flowers bloom and warmer temperatures.

Reading & Writing: Our ‘Famous Figures’ unit has officially started this week. Students were assigned a famous figure and every day, we are reading one chapter and taking notes as we go. I am modeling this process and scaffolding all students as we read each chapter and look for certain facts on our person. After we find facts, we are recording them on a sticky note. We will transfer these notes to a fact finder, which will help us with our final presentation prep. Students will be presenting the first week of May. I am incredibly excited for you all to see all of their hard work as they tackle these chapter books.

Math: The traditional stacking math strategy has been introduced this week in class. Students learned how to carry over and borrow with addition and subtraction with double digit numbers. This strategy should look very familiar, as it is the strategy we all use daily in our lives if we ever encounter a math equation. Unit 7 is beginning next week. Unit 7 involves fractions, measurement and more addition comprehension.

Science: Students will be learning about life cycles and plants in April. We will be growing various types of grass, flowers and watching vegetables sprout!

Announcements:

  1. April 5 is school wide pajama day! Please dress comfy and have fun at school!

  2. April 6 is our great reading adventure from 10:00 – 2:00 pm.

  3. The Heritage Project will be starting next week! Mr. Mulligan’s class is the only class that is doing these projects in the classroom. We will be researching our country with different resources and creating an electronic presentation.

  4. Our chapter book challenge for March was a soaring success!! 17 kids created outstanding and creative book reports on their chapter book. The creativity of my students blow me away every day. Great job and thank you so much parents for working with your child on this project. Next month, we will be doing the same project – Costa Vida is sponsoring our project with gift cards and Frisbees for those who participate. Those projects will be due and presented April 29.
