February 10 - February 15

Hello Parents!

What a wonderful Valentine’s Day week. I hope you all enjoyed the special day with loved ones. Please enjoy the long weekend and I will see you all next Wednesday! Let’s talk about our week and what to expect next week.

In reading, students have been practicing comprehension strategies and fluency strategies while we dive into chapter books. I am so excited because every single student is emerged in a chapter book during this time. Students are reading non-fiction and enjoyable fiction stories. We will keep up this practice until the end of the year. Students are trying to make sure they are capable of taking notes and remembering important parts for comprehension strategies. In addition, next week, students will be learning author’s purpose. They will be concluding if an author wrote a text/article for persuading reasons, informational reasons, or simply for enjoyment.

In writing, students will be creating their next two opinion pieces. What is your favorite food and what is your favorite season. Students will be giving their opinion and also stating reasons why they feel this way. We will continue our book review study after the short week.

In Math, students have been diving into geometry. Students will be taking a quick check in test for me on Wednesday so I can see their shape recognition. Students are also mastering the concept of sides and vertices. Next week, we will be studying area of different shapes.

Announcements:

1. Thank you so much for those parents who reached out about our 2nd grade gala basket. I appreciate your help so much. I am going to be creating a signup genius to have volunteers select items they wish to contribute to our basket. Please expect to see this next week.

2. At the silent auction, I will be auctioning off a special lunch where you can buy a time that I will have a Chick-Fil-A lunch with your child and one friend of their choice. All 2nd grade teachers are doing this and we hope that you will consider this. It should be a ton of fun!! J

3. There is no school next Monday or Tuesday. Enjoy your time off!

4. Mr. Mulligan’s 2nd grade class is partnering up with Costa Vida, Mad Greens and Dions for a special “Mr. Mulligan’s 2nd Grade Chapter Book Challenge!” Students are going to receive more information on this next week where they will be reading for tasty gift cards to these participating restaurants!! This opportunity is only for our class and I am so excited that local businesses hope to partner up with our class! More information coming soon.
