January 20 - January 25

Good Afternoon Parents,

Hope you all enjoyed our three-day week! It sure did fly by! Let’s discuss all of the great things covered this week and what to expect next week!

In Reading this week, students continued their goals similar to last week. Students are trying to read like the characters. In addition, students began to act out the story with gestures to become the character. This helps students comprehend the story and understand mood that can be found within. Next week, students are going to be start book studies! I am so excited for this practice. I will be meeting with every group daily to work on comprehension, fluency and vocabulary. We will be reading a variety of non-fiction chapter books and enjoyable fiction.

In Writing this week, students were writing their opinion on which fairy tale version they prefer. For example, we read 2 different Hansel and Gretle stories. One was from Egypt and one was from China. Students had to pick which they preferred and back their opinion with reasons. Next week, students are going to continue this practice by writing book reviews.

In Math, students have been mastering their knowledge of coins. With this practice, students have been adding different sums together using any double digit addition strategy that they prefer. Next week, students will continue this practice. We will also be learning the traditional addition strategy to help students quickly add. (FINALLY!)

In Science, students continued their study of balance and motion by finding counter balances with different shapes. Students were able to create counter balances on the paper and have it balance perfectly on the tip of their finger. Students next week will continue their study of balance.

Announcements:

1. Typing club will begin next week where students will be expected to practice typing ONCE A WEEK only at home. Please expect further explanation next week.

2. Class picture forms are being sent home today. Please return these sheets by the date posted on the form: January 30, 2019.

3. Valentine Candy Grams will start being sold on February 2, 2019.
