Good Afternoon Parents,

I hope you are staying warm on this chilly afternoon! Let’s talk about our fantastic week that we had here in 2nd grade.

In Reading, students have been working on making our reading more fluent. Students have had 5 constant goals over the course of the week:

  1. Reread aloud and in your head.

  2. Scoop words into longer phrases.

  3. Talk like the characters.

  4. Make your voice match the mood.

  5. Read with a just right pace.

Through our mentor text series, Mercy Watson, students have been listening to me read fluently and demonstrate how these goals should be addressed. The students are becoming amazing at these 5 goals. Our class favorite goal is speaking in character voices. Students retain more about the story when they become the character. Try this strategy at home if you wish to hear your child practice.

In Writing, students have been exploring opinions. This week students wrote about their favorite snowy day activity and their favorite sport. In addition to this, students wrote opinion pieces on our first Mercy Watson book. They described how many stars they would give it and why. Next week, students will start to read two different versions of fairy tales and give their opinion on which they prefer more, in their opinion.

In Math, students have been working on counting in three-digit numbers fluently. We have started to play a game called Sparkle. Students stand in a circle and work together to count by 10s all the way up until I tell them to start subtracting by 10. The game works mental math and teamwork. In addition, students are working on coin recognition and adding different coin values.

Science: Students began their study of balance and motion by finding counter balances with crayfish cutouts. Students were able to create counter balances on the paper and have it balance perfectly on the tip of their finger. Students next week will continue their study of balance.
