Week of 12/10 - 12/15

Dear Parents,

I hope you had a relaxing weekend. Hard to believe that we only have 10 more school days until our holiday break. This year is flying by! Let’s talk about the week ahead of us!

Reading: Students have been practicing their knowledge on showing evidence and proving their answers. In addition to this, students are having to restate their answers using complete sentences – both verbally and written. This is an important 2nd grade standard that is growing. Also, last week, students were reading their independent book and finding collective noun examples. This week, students will be practicing vivid verbs.

Writing: The animal research books are about halfway done right now. Students have spent the last couple of weeks researching their animal and writing their ideas. Now, students have worked with me individually on their writing and they are putting their hard work into their final draft. These books are projected to be complete by Friday. After the animal research, students will be practicing opinion writing.

Math: Measurement is being practiced now. Students have been using their rules that they created to measure inches, feet and yards. Students are also practicing converting these units into each other. For example, 1 yard is 3 feet or 1 yard is 36 inches, etc. Students will be continuing their knowledge of measurement by studying it with story problems.

Science: This week is our Wind Festival. Students have been studying air, cloud types, moon cycles, weather and wind. On Thursday, students will be participating in a fun half day of science. Students will transition from class to class where each teacher will be doing a science experiment relating to wind.
