Hello Families,

Hope your Labor Day Weekend is going great so far! Let’s talk about our week and what to expect in our upcoming week.

Reading: In Reading this week, students focused on learning targets that were around fluency and comprehension. Students were exposed to the practice of “scooping words.” With this strategy, students are working on their fluency skills. When reading texts, we will pre-read the sentence and find snap words. Snap words are words that we know in a snap. Any word that we don’t know, we will chunk apart. From there, students can scoop as much of the sentence as possible to sound fluent. This helps students from sounding like robots as they read in these early stages. In addition to scooping, students are stopping to check for understanding. I am teaching the students to read about 4 pages then stop and check for understanding. Who are the main characters? Where is the setting? What is the main problem? What emotions the characters have shared? Next week, students will continue to scoop their books and their comprehension practice.

Writing: All I can say is WOW! This week in writing, students worked on their first narrative piece. We are working on small moments. Students are trying to focus on a specific event from stories that they can recount. I gave students the example of watermelon stories / watermelon slice stories / watermelon seed stories. In this practice, students are producing watermelon seed stories. A watermelon seed story is basically a story that zooms in on one specific event in great detail. For example, the emotions that I had when I rode a roller coaster at Elitch Gardens vs. Over my weekend, I went to Elitches and did many things. Students have been writing pages after pages of their first story. I am so proud of them with this practice. Next week, we will be writing a few more stories so we can pick one that we wish to take to the full editing process.

Math: In Math this week, students have been practicing their fluency to 20 with number racks and a variety of math games that helps students with computational fluency. We are working on being able to say sums to problems quick. Next week, students are going to be exposed to time and how to properly tell time in a variety of ways such as digital and analog.

Social Studies: Students continued their studies of urban, suburban, and rural areas. Next week, students will be creating their own town based off of an area of their choice. They will decide if they wish to create an urban, rural or suburban area. Students will need to know the characteristics of each area.
