Blog December 1, 2017

Happy December families! November came and left so quickly and the weather lately feels more like April or May. I am not complaining, as I love being able to take the kids out for our brain breaks and not freeze! This month we have 3 full weeks of learning.

Reading & Writing – This month in Language Arts, students are doing a huge research project for Quarter 2. The Animal Research Project is students’ first exposure to non-fiction texts and all of the features found within these texts. Students are going to be mastering their understanding of index, table of contents, visuals, keywords, captions, etc. While reading different non-fiction texts, students are going to be picking an animal that they will become masters at. Students have already picked their animals. This week, students researched their animal’s appearance, diets, habitats and fun facts. In addition, students found seven keywords they will bold in their expert books to create an index with. These finished books will be presented the last week of school before Winter Break. Students will present to their peers and other 2nd grade classes.

Math - Story problems are coming! These types of problems are quite hard for students because not only do they need to know the correct strategy, but they need to have comprehension of what the question is asking. We will be utilizing CUBES to help us understand. Students have been practicing many strategies the past few weeks. You have access to all of these videos online at our YouTube website. Please access these by scrolling down on the main menu to our resources section.

Social Studies – Native American research has started. We are going to research five different Native American tribes during this month. Students will be comparing and contrasting cultures of the different tribes and become pros at lifestyles and artifacts of each tribe.

Our Holiday Shop visit will be December 7th and our Winter Party will be December 22nd at 9:30. Stay tuned for volunteer opportunities!
